What is Hypnosis?

A state of consciousness involving focused attention and reduced peripheral awareness characterized by an enhanced capacity for response to positive suggestion. Hypnosis is a natural state of mind. It is one that we experience quite often throughout the day. If you have ever been captivated by a book or novel, got lost in daydreaming, or even missed your exit while driving because you were lost in thought, you have experienced the state of hypnosis.

Still, hypnosis is an altered state of mind characterized by a shift from beta brainwaves (or our regular waking state) to alpha brainwaves. In an alpha brainwave state, research has demonstrated an increase in creativity, relaxation, and openness to new ideas, all of which help to promote the radical changes that can occur when utilizing the hypnotic state for behavioral and psychological change.

What is Hypnotherapy?

Simply put, hypnotherapy is the application of certain techniques specifically designed to promote change while utilizing the state of hypnosis. There are many well trained hypnotherapists without a clinical background. Similarly, there are many clinicians who utilize hypnosis as a helpful tool in their practice without accessing its true capacity for change. The first application is utilizing guided imagery to access the creative power of the subconscious mind. Our mind communicates in stories and images, and in a relaxed state, the visualization of new experiences and ideas can create a strong impression. The second application is utilizing direct positive suggestions and affirmations, often as a regular practice through self-hypnosis to fully integrate behavioral changes and helpful thoughts. The final application is the most potent modality in hypnosis: Regression therapy.

Our basic operating philosophy is that past events result in the internalization of negative core beliefs. Those core beliefs remain with us and, over time, create unpleasant emotions. Those emotions that haven’t been dealt with result in either unhealthy behavioral patterns or they manifest in the physical body. Through regression therapy, we are able to quickly access the negative core beliefs and related experiences associated with the beliefs in order to heal these past memories quickly and safely.

Myth 1
Fact 1

Hypnosis is sleep, an unconscious state and, when hypnotized, a person is not aware of his or her surroundings.

In hypnosis awareness is increased. If an individual falls asleep, that is not hypnosis. Hypnosis may resemble sleep, but is in fact a state of expanded awareness. The individual is fully aware of what is being said in hypnosis and can reject any suggestion if desired.

Myth 2
Fact 2

A person may not be easily awakened and may remain in the hypnotic state, indefinitely, just like the movie Office Space.

No one has remained indefinitely in a hypnotic state. The state can be terminated at will. One cannot get stuck in hypnosis and not wake up.

Myth 3
Fact 3

The strong-willed, more intelligent people cannot be hypnotized.

It takes imagination and a willingness to cooperate for one to be hypnotized. The truth is the more creative and intelligent a person is, the easier it is for that individual to experience hypnosis. A strong will is actually helpful, especially if the person uses it to have a strong motivation and definite reason for being hypnotized.

Myth 4
Fact 4

Hypnosis is truth serum. A person could be made to say anything, reveal secrets, or say embarrassing things.

You can edit and withhold information in hypnosis. You do not have to reveal secrets. In fact, you can even lie in hypnosis. When hypnotized, you will not do anything against your will. And, while truth and disclosure are encouraged, a client can reject any suggestion that is provided. A client will never divulge or do anything that he or she would not say or do in a regular waking state.

Hypnosis is a surrender of one’s will to the hypnotist. It is one “stronger” person having power over a “weaker” person, where the hypnotic subject is under the power of the hypnotist.

A hypnotherapist does not have power over another person. Modern hypnosis uses the word “in” when describing hypnosis, in that a person is “in” a hypnotic state. Modern hypnosis does not use the word “under” as to dispel the theory that the client is “under” the control of the hypnotherapist.

Clients resolve their issues from their own inner resources, i.e. from their own creative mind. The hypnotherapist is simply the facilitator.

All hypnosis is self-hypnosis.
